CLFFD in Aviva Contest. Vote Now! October 4, 2011

Sunny Cove has been a part of Community Living Fort Frances and District for over 30 years now and we want to see it last for at least 30 years more.

That’s why CLFFD has entered the Aviva Community Fund contest to secure funding for Sunny Cove Camp in 2012. And we need your vote now.

For the past three years, Aviva Insurance has set aside $1 million for non-profit organizations that come up with ideas to bring their community together and illicit good change in their respective areas. The associations post their ideas online and gather votes. The ones with the most votes receive money to make their plans come to fruition.

Since the late 1970’s, CLFFD has brought its clients up to Sunny Cove Camp to give them an experience of camping that they normally wouldn’t be able to have. Most of our clients don’t have the means or the ability to camp on their own and this way they are able to have a week of fun away from home with friends.

Though the camp started out just for the intellectually disabled people of Fort Frances, it has since expanded to include people from all over Northwestern Ontario and from Northern Minnesota. Groups come from Atikokan, Sioux Lookout, and International Falls to enjoy the splendors of Sunny Cove Camp.

The week offers opportunities for our clients to take part in outdoor activities such as swimming, t-ball, and horseshoes, as well as indoor activities such as crafts, interactive music sessions, bingo and other games, and catching up with friends they haven’t seen in since the last district wide event. There are also larger events planned for the clients to enjoy, depending on the theme of the year. One year saw a Powwow happen and other years have had different bands come for social dances.

The service users that attend Sunny Cove look forward to it with great anticipation every year as the big celebratory end to their summer. It brings together members from all over the district, not just clients but volunteers and family members as well. All involved hope to see the week at Sunny Cove Camp happen for many more years to come.
